What Is A Role-Playing Game?

Roleplaying Game?!

    What Roleplaying Is
Roleplaying is probably best described as interactive storytelling with rules. In roleplaying, a number of players assume the role of fictional characters while one special player, the gamemaster, assumes the role of the world around them and acts as referee during disputes. Character actions and reactions are improvised by the players during play not rehearsed or dictated by the gamesmaster.

    What Roleplaying Isn't
Roleplaying is not an occult practice. While 'Fantasy Roleplaying' can contain elements of magic and supernatural creatures it remains in the context of 'make believe' and is no more dangerous than your five-year old daughter pretending to be a 'fairy princess' or dressing up as a goblin at Halloween.

    Who Roleplaying is for
Roleplaying is often perceived as being a hobby for teenage boys, often 'nerds' and 'geeks.' This is blatantly untrue. A truly astounding array of people enjoy the hobby of roleplaying. Men and women from all walks of life, ranging in age from early teens to late 60s and beyond can enjoy roleplaying.

The sole prerequisites for roleplaying are imagination and a willingness to express it.

    Types of Roleplaying Games?
The most common form of Roleplaying is 'Tabletop gaming,' where the players and games master sit around a table verbally describing the words and actions of their characters. When the results of a character's actions are in doubt (e.g. is a character able to force a door open), dice are used to decide the result.

A relatively recent form of Roleplaying is Live-Action Roleplaying (LARP). In a LARP, players are more mobile and in many cases go to the additional effort of dressing as their characters. LARPS sometimes, but not always cater to more players than a tabletop game.
