The Founding of Tankard
THE FOUNDING OF TANKARD
Near the dawning of the Age of Light, Hadran became the center of the known world, and races all across the realm were drawn to the region. When Hadran was divided into six kingdoms, each claiming an affinity to an element, it was only a matter of time before the dwarves migrated to the Emerald District, which was located in the northwestern section of the city.
Soon enough, however, the bigotry and power struggles of the largely human population forced the dwarves and many other demi-human races outward from the core knowledge centers of Hadran, viewed largely as either reasons for the growing conflict or thieves trying to steal power from the humans. and control of the newly established Duchy of Allwyn. While the humans obsessed over control of the newly established Duchy of Allwyn, the dwarves instead turned their attention to the range of mountains just northwest of the region.
In the 72nd year of the Age of Light, the dwarves established the small mining community of Tankard as they began to delve into the mountains for gems and ore. Though their finds and crafted works proved profitable to the Emerald House, the dwarves were not fully trusted as allies, and resentment grew on both sides.
Finally, in 103 AL, the dwarves moved fully into the Mines of Tankard, using the trading town as the sole means of communication with the outside realm. In doing so, the dwarves weathered the next few centuries of conflicts as in-fighting claimed Hadran, all the while delving deeper into the mountains.
It was only a matter of time before the dwarves of Tankard encountered their evil brethren, the dark dwarves. Soon, fighting ensued for control of the treasures within the mountains, and small battles and skirmishes became commonplace. Neither side made significant headway in removing their kin from the tunnels, until in 614 AL, a young general by the name of Bronlor Hammerfall scored a critical victory when a well-timed ambush killed many commanders in the dark dwarven leadership. The resistance posed by the dark dwarves quickly evaporated and the dwarves established a firm hold on the Mines of Tankard.
Realizing at the same time that their forces lacked a significant leader, talk began to rumble about naming a King. It had been centuries since the dwarves had had any contact with their homeland, and it became apparent that no contact would be forthcoming anytime soon. Thus, there was little argument about choosing a King from among their best leaders, and Bronlor Hammerfall was eventually crowned King of Tankard. It is in honor of King Bronlor Hammerfall that the Hammerfall Mountains bear his name to this very day.
