Returning To The Mines
RETURNING TO THE MINES
In the dawning of the 1013th year, all opinions were abruptly united when a dwarven monastery near Tankard was destroyed by frost giants. The Guardians of the Forge, a dwarven order of monks devoted to protecting the Spirit of the Forgefires used to light and maintain the smithy forges of Tankard, had existed for centuries in the foothills of the Hammerfall Mountains.
The frost giants attack was believed by many dwarven leaders to have been spurred by an alliance with the dark dwarves. While such an alliance seemed doubtful considering the hatred the giant races bore towards all dwarven races, it became blatantly apparent that they no longer wanted to sit and be easy prey for their enemies.
Thus, using an unnaturally cold winter season and a celestial event in the form of a meteor storm as a good omen for the timing of their strike, General Durim Hammerfist and the dwarves of Tankard put their plans in motion. A call to arms to any allies went out to all that would aid in the assault, though the dwarves had waited long enough and would attack alone if need be.
They were surprised and delighted when their call was answered by the dwarf Thorak Mithralfist of the Shire of Hero's Reach. Mithralfist rallied helpful adventurers that had assisted his town of Freehaven in the past. The adventurers secured the town of Tankard while General Hammerfist lead an assault on the mines and undercity of Tankard, where the bulk of the dark dwarven opposition was thought to be entrenched.
So swift and successful were the initial strikes that the dwarven forces were able to break through the lines of the dark dwarves within but a day. Without efficient defense plans or the help of any Servosan spellcasters, the dark dwarves were quickly routed and forced into the lowest chambers under the mines of Tankard. Finally, the dwarves of Tankard had returned home...
