Free action needs to be done at the time of the effect right? If you get snared, you have to choose to resist at that moment. You can't get snared and the decide later to get out.

Or get Free Action casted on you after being snared? That's reserved for release right?

IHave seen people use it the way I've described just wanted to clarify.

That is correct. Free Action is preventative only, not a retroactive removal. It must be used at the time the effect affects the user/target.
